For many rural areas in Cumbria, a reliable signal can make a huge difference to everyday life and even emergency situations.

Stockdalewath, a village without phone signal but prone to flooding and home destruction, experienced severe flooding in 2024. This prevented residents from receiving evacuation alerts.

Recently, Cybermoor Services Ltd successfully demonstrated 4G coverage at Stockdalewath via Wavemobile’s compact mobile network, powered by Starlink satellite with electricity provided from an MG electric car. The kit demonstrated provides 4G coverage fitting in a case about the size of a pillow, including the radio, a Starlink Mini and the cables, power supplies.

Soon, the team will permanently install two cellXica M4Q devices in the area to enhance connectivity and ensure residents stay connected during disasters or power outages. Each unit can operate for up to two days on battery power alone, ensuring residents stay connected while waiting for emergency response. Together, the sites will provide essential basic coverage across an area of around 1km, covering both Stockdalewath and High Bridge, allowing residents to communicate with the emergency services, neighbours and family.

This work supports residents, visitors, businesses and emergency services in places where traditional network rollout has often proved difficult. Importantly, this connectivity can also support emergency access. Existing Wavemobile networks have enabled hundreds of 999 calls in remote areas, particularly in mountainous regions including Cumbria and Wales.

Projects like these demonstrate how innovative partnerships and rural-focused technology can help close the digital divide, ensuring communities are safer, better connected and more resilient.
