The 5G Rural Integrated Testbed (5GRIT) is a partnership of SMEs and Universities building a 5G testbed to develop and test innovative solutions for rural areas. It was one of six DCMS funded projects to keep Britain at the forefront of connectivity. by accelerating the deployment of next generation digital infrastructure and driving forward new 5G business opportunities.
The 5GRIT partners have designed and tested amazing new services – previously not possible due to poor internet connections, including developing business cases trials with rural businesses and residents.
5GRIT is about testing connectivity across tourism, farming, remote broadband and interface with 5G technology, for example:
- an augmented reality tourism app developed an enhanced experience for tourists visiting rural areas like the North Pennines
- using 5G technology via airborne drones, a precision farming service was development for crop and livestock monitoring.
